Metro Washington, DC

Whether searching for a house or an apartment in the DC area, price is an important factor. Living in Washington, DC is expensive.

The Northwest quadrant of Washington is the most pet-friendly area to live. This are is also where the White House is located. This area encompasses the following neighborhoods (not limited to this list):

• Georgetown
• DuPont Circle
• Capital Hill
• Penn Quarter
• Cleveland Park
• Foggy Bottom
• Adams Morgan
• The Palisades

Georgetown is largely populated by students that attend Georgetown University. There are multi-million dollar townhouses in the residential area of Georgetown. Young, wealthy professionals live in this area. The Shops at Georgetown Park is an indoor shopping mall with more than 100 stores and restaurants. Georgetown has a very high crime rate.

DuPont Circle is a much safer neighborhood. DuPont Circle is literally a social circle with numerous bars and restaurants, outdoor garden and fountain and several coffeehouses. The average household income is about half that of Georgetown residents.

Capital Hill is the largest historical residential neighborhood in the city. It is where Union Station is located. There are over 130 stores at Union Station. This is an area that is very touristy. Located here are:

• Capital building
• Supreme Court building
• Library of Congress
• Marine Barracks
• Washington Navy Yard
• Congressional Cemetery

Penn Quarter/Chinatown/Downtown Washington, DC is also home to many restaurant chains as well as authentic Chinese restaurants. The income level is slightly lower and the price of homes is comparable to DuPont Circle. However, the murder rate is much higher in the downtown.

Cleveland Park is a neighborhood known for its historic homes. Cleveland Park also has a variety of restaurants including Italian, Greek, French and Irish.

Foggy Bottom/West end of Washington, DC is where George Washington University is located. The Watergate offices are also located in this neighborhood. The residents there are former Senators or government employees. The rest of the population in this area is students. This area has a very high robbery rate.

Adams Morgan is the center of DC's nightlife and is popular with young professionals. The neighborhood has a wide variety of entertainment including restaurants and bars as well as coffeehouses, bookstores and art galleries.

The Palisades runs along the Potomac River from Georgetown University to Maryland. The homes along the Potomac have great sunset views. Median income is comparable to Georgetown.

Northeast Washington is a residential area with median household incomes similar to those of DuPont Circle or Downtown. The Catholic University is located here. The Atlas Performing Arts Center is located here as well. Northeast Washington is regaining popularity again for transplants moving to the area. It is a nice suburban area with lots of family oriented things to do.

Residents living outside the city enjoy a tremendous drop in the crime rate. In the 1990’s Washington, DC was the “murder capital of the world”. In recent years, the crime rate has dropped. However, Washington, DC still has a high murder rate.

Fairfax, Virginia residents receive the benefits of a safe neighborhood, affordable homes and being able to drive into Washington, DC to enjoy city life whenever they want. They can feel like they are from DC yet they do not live their lives in the heart of the city. Residents have the best of both worlds when living in the suburbs.

McLean, Virginia is also in Fairfax County but is a lot pricier than the city of Fairfax. The residents in McLean tend to be a little older than Washington, DC residents and better established. Their income levels are higher and many of the homes are upward of $1 million. This area is close to Langley (the CIA headquarters).
