My name is Kyle Mackenzie, and I am Director of Fleet Maintenance here at Hilldrup. My background is with the Coast Guard, where I served on active duty for ten years and learned to turn a wrench. When I left the military and transitioned to civilian life again, I stayed in the fleet maintenance realm and eventually found my way into the moving industry and to Hilldrup. Since the day I joined the team, I have felt like I found an extended family.
My primary job is to ensure all our vehicles and equipment, especially our tractors and trailers for our drivers and Van Operators, are in working order. We handle preventative maintenance, as well as repairs, so our Move Coordinators can coordinate timelines with confidence and our drivers can trust we have their backs should any issues arise. I believe in a good, solid preventative maintenance program, and the team and I aim to be the best fleet maintenance department in the country. While that means some long hours, our shop is open nearly 16 hours a day so we’re always on-call for our drivers, we always rise to the challenge. We know what we do literally makes sure our business and our customers keep moving.
The reality, of course, is that sometimes things break. That’s where experience matters. I remember one time we had a trailer loaded and off servicing a customer’s move and not once, but three times in a matter of hours we had a tire go out. We worked quickly to involve our maintenance team and found a suspension related problem you couldn’t see with the naked eye. Quick thinking, problem solving and good communication helped to get the trailer back on the road quickly so we could satisfy our customer and their schedule. I was proud of our team, and I personally love that as long as I’ve been in this business, I’m still seeing and learning new things.
